Anderson Hicks Family Reunion

Bridging the gap & passing the torch in 2008!

Message From The Committee

Greetings Family,

Deborah and I would like to first give thanks to GOD for giving us both the health and the strength to work on OUR family web site and the 2008 family reunion.  She and I have taken information provided by various family members to help recreate OUR family history.  We are just putting in print the stories that have been passed down by the Griots of the family.

Our mission is to pass on the family history so that future generations of Anderson Hicks descendants will have know "from wence they come."   The purpose of the family reunion is to gather family together to laugh/share stories and have new experiences with one another.  Current, Anderson Hicks descendants reside in most of the states in the United States.  Many of us are not even aware that there are bloodline family members in the same state and in some cases in the same city.

Since our last family reunion, Deb and I have made contact with over 20 bloodline families that are not even aware of the Anderson Hicks Family Reunion.  Hopefully, our 2008 family reunion will include some of these families.

Even though Deb and I are planning the family reunion, we would love to hear from everyone regarding the websites or newsletter.

Wishing everyone, Good Health, Secure Finances, and Blessings beyond your belief.

Til we meet in Las Vegas,

Susan and Deborah

Deborah Evans - Co-Chair 2008

I began collecting and compiling family data at the urging of my grandfather in 1994.  Conducted oral interviews, gathered information from family members and bought a family tree computer program.

Family’s database now has slightly over 2,000 members and in-laws, spread over 9 generations starting in early 1820's.

I have taken photographs from childhood because I felt the need to record my surroundings, only in later years understanding the linkage to the older oral recollections. These photographs, show the progression of the immediate family from being described by my mother as, “small enough to fit in a phone booth” to a multi-generational group, in a time when few people even remember phone booths!  I continue to research and record family memories as an obligation to pass on to my grandchildren their heritage and family

15 years ago, if someone had asked which branch of the Hicks family I was affiliated with, or who Anderson Hicks was, I would have been unable to answer. My grandmother died when I was 7 months old so I did not grow up spending as much time around my grandfather and his family as I would have liked. Neither of my parents spoke on family ties, my mother being an only child and my father being the oldest in his.

In the early 90’s, my grandfather, Albert Hicks implored me to research and record the family history and pass on my findings. His sister, Flora Hicks Stone had started research with her daughter Annette but their concentration was on their mother Minerva’s roots and grandfather’s Civil War connection. I gave lip service to starting until the early computer databases became available, both for research and recording. Since 1994, I have been actively involved in the research of Census records, marriage, death and other files available on the Internet to piece together the pieces he, Flora, and their cousin Bob Gleaves entrusted to me.

When he passed in 1997, I had approximately 400 names tied together. Today this number is over 2,000. I still need to visit Tennessee to confirm information from the original records. Many records are now available online.  Shortly after he passed, I was guided to my cousin Susan Lowe who is also researching. She descends from Toby’s sister, Margaret which makes her my half 4th cousin.

Susan's primary objective is her father’s side which complements my research. In addition to the direct line from Anderson, I segue off to the in-laws and outlaws in the family so I touched upon her branches and we work well together. I deal with the past, preferring to read between the lines of old forms and she deals with the present. Many of you have probably gotten a probing call from her when she isn’t reading an old newspaper entry

.

This video is a documentation of my portion of the Toby branch, which supplements the written records. The group that used to fit in a phone booth, now requires a whole lot more room, doubling each of the past 3 generations. For those of you too young to remember, a phone booth was a tall wooden box, with glass insets and folding doors that offered privacy to individuals making telephone calls on a corded instrument in public, while standing still. Superman used them for changing from Clark Kent. As an outgrowth of my research and understanding, I also do heritage seminars to try to bring the past to life for the young, enlightening them as to the changes I have seen in my lifetime alone, as well as some of the inventions that led to their present day, such as Dick Tracy wristwatch and Ohura’s earpiece on Star Trek.

Of Anderson’s two families, I have information on 4 children and am seeking more. I request copies of family files, pictures, obits, and stories to fill in the gaps.

Thank you for sharing my memories.
